Now I must be honest, personally, I’m not a Canton Jones fan at all. I’ve always felt like his style was generic, and corny. Don’t get me wrong, “The Password” is a powerful song but when I heard ‘Holy Ghost Girl’ I shut the song off after 30 seconds. I felt the lyrics were too corny. It’s funny how I’m saying all this and the song that’s spinning in my spirit is ‘Hater Day’. Now I’m not hatin on Canton, just his music, but he really stepped it up with ‘Hater Day’. This has been my jam for a long time now. I feel it it is a great song for our generation right now. As I look among the youth I know, it seems like having a Hater is the new ipod.It’s the hot new commodoity. Everyone has to have one. We put it up on our away messages about how we have so much Haters. How my hater can’t bring me down. How we feel so bad for our haters because all they can do is watch us as we shine. It’s on our myspace quotes and Facebook profiles. Heck, I was even feeling left out, I wanted to make a cool myspace healine about having a hater. Having a hater has become such a trend and the typical “christian” way of dealing with our haters, is to let them go their way, and we go our own. “I’m saved, so I ain’t gonna fight my hater, but I’ll just say Hi and Bye and leave it at that.” What I love about ‘Hater Day’ is that Canton is challenging us to go further than that.
The chorus repeats “Imma do something good for my hater today”. Instead of ignoring the hater, Canton is actually going to help the hater out. And not just little things, he’s going completely out of his way.

This is crazy! Giving the person that despises you money? Doing a chore for them? Asking about thier day?Simply Crazy indeed, but come on, we’re serving a God who has done some crazy things. The love of God does not simply wave and give a fake smile. The love of God does not ignore or leave a situation unmended. How many of us have prayed the Lord’s vengeance upon our haters instead of praying prosperirty on our haters. How many of us have watched our haters fall instead of helping them up when we see them at their low points. It’s definetly hard. Canton even includes “Lord help me with tomorrow” showing that even though he’s set on doing it now, he doesn’t know about how well he’ll hold out tomorrow. This song has everything to do with destroying ourselves, crucifying the flesh, and letting God’s love shine through us. My favorite lyric is
“It May be hard today, but ima absolutely show the love of god today”
Canton is refusing to let his flesh, refusing to let the idea that he may look weak, get in the way, of being a blessing unto others. And last but not least, the verse beautifully ends with:
“The mess ends today,imma make you my friend today ”
Canton, is not letting the sun go down on this situation. It’s no longer, “I’m doing something nice for my hater” but rather “I’m doing something nice for friend”. I encourage you, do something nice for your hater, cut out this immature mess. Don’t let your pride or feelings get in the way of being true and sincere to God’s word. Get rid of your Hater. Make him/her your friend! I’tll be hard first, but God will most definetly make a way. The same way the Lord could open up a way of Salvation, to people who beat him, spat on his name, even to someone, who’s main goal was crucify his own people! Then you too can definetly show some love to a hater. Erase that Hater title, make them your friend! That’s what’s spinnin’ in my spirit!
Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another (John 13:34).
But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you (Luke 6:27-28).
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse (Romans 12:14).
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:17-21).
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing (1 Peter 3:9).
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble (1 John 2:9-10).
